NOWA at the European Ocean Days

Advocating for gender equality and sustainable aquaculture

This week, Marilou SUC, Secretary General of NOWA, represented the association at the European Ocean Days in Brussels.

The event featured a comprehensive program, including discussions on the Ocean Pact and the importance of ensuring that the aquaculture sector is well-represented within the blue economy.

As part of NOWA’s advocacy mission, Marilou emphasized the need for gender equality in aquaculture, highlighting that attracting the best talents is essential to drive the industry forward.

Throughout the week, Marilou engaged with partners and networks from the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and other maritime regions, discussing opportunities for collaboration and the promotion of sustainable and responsible practices. A key focus was on regenerative aquaculture and the role of innovative technologies in enhancing the sector’s sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity.

During the Blue Invest Day yesterday, several startups presented their technological innovations for aquaculture, reinforcing the crucial role of innovation in advancing the industry.

Marilou also secured valuable support for NOWA’s mission and received an invitation to the Women for Ocean Action event on June 8 in Nice, following the UNOC side event Ocean Science Congress.

There, NOWA will present a poster and give an oral presentation on the theme: “Empowering change in ocean science: raising women's voices through a supportive network”

Advocacy and awareness

As part of its mission, NOWA advocates for gender equality, sustainable aquaculture practices, and the importance of women's leadership in the industry.

The association works to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities for women in aquaculture by engaging with advisory boards, associations, and institutions to ensure that women’s roles are recognized and integrated into industry policies.

Events like the European Ocean Days are vital platforms for amplifying these messages and promoting gender equality in the sector.
