Official constitution of NOWA: a new chapter for women in aquaculture

We are delighted to announce the official constitution of NOWA (Network of Women in Aquaculture) as a French association under the Loi 1901.

This significant milestone was achieved during the General Constitutive Assembly, where the statutes outlining NOWA's mission were adopted, and the new Board was elected.




A Vision for equality and empowerment


The constitution of NOWA marks the beginning of a transformative journey aimed at promoting gender equality and inclusivity in the global aquaculture industry.

Our mission is to provide a platform where women in aquaculture can find support, training, and advocacy, helping them overcome barriers and thrive in their careers.


The association's statutes reflect our commitment to these goals and set the foundation for our activities moving forward.





The founders and new board of NOWA


During the assembly, the following distinguished women were elected to lead NOWA:



  • President: Christina Zantioti



As the President of NOWA, Christina Zantioti will provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the association. She will be responsible for representing NOWA at major events and in discussions with key stakeholders.

Christina is a researcher and specialist in aquaculture with extensive experience in sustainable aquaculture practices.

Christina’s personal involvement includes guiding NOWA's scientific and environmental initiatives. Her expertise will be pivotal in shaping research agendas and promoting best practices in sustainable aquaculture within the association.






  • Vice President: Ilaria Bellomo


As Vice President, Illaria Bellomo will support the President and step in when the President is unavailable. She will also lead NOWA’s policy advocacy efforts, ensuring that gender-inclusive policies are at the forefront of the association's agenda.

Illaria is a Project Manager at FEDERPESCA with a specialization in policy advisory.

Illaria’s role involves spearheading policy advocacy initiatives, engaging with policymakers, and developing programs that promote gender equality in the aquaculture sector.

She will also take care of communication and marketing, ensuring that NOWA's message reaches a wide audience effectively.





  • General Secretary: Marilou Suc



As General Secretary, Marilou Suc will manage the administration of NOWA, ensuring that the association's activities are well-coordinated.

Marilou is a Blue Growth Consultant at Blue Connection, focusing on innovation and new technologies applied to aquaculture.

Marilou will promote innovative, resilient, and sustainable aquaculture through new technologies. Her role involves developing and implementing programs that incorporate cutting-edge technologies to advance sustainable practices within the industry.






  • Treasurer: Garazi Rodriguez



As Treasurer, Garazi Rodriguez will be responsible for the financial management of NOWA. She will oversee budgeting, financial planning, and the management of funds to ensure the financial health of the association.

Garazi is the Coordinadora de la Red de Innovación de APROMAR and Responsable de los Planes de Producción y Comercialización.

Garazi will handle partnerships and international relations, working to secure funding and foster collaborations with other organizations.







Next Steps: Empowering Women in Aquaculture


With our legal foundation established, NOWA is now focused on preparing the first suite of services and actions to empower women in aquaculture.

Our initiatives will include:


  • Training Programs: Tailored courses to enhance technical skills and leadership capabilities.


  • Networking Opportunities: Platforms for women to connect, collaborate, and share experiences.


  • Empowerment Activities: Programs designed to boost confidence and career advancement, including mentoring and job fairs.





Celebrating at AQUA 2024


We are excited to celebrate the official launch of NOWA during AQUA 2024, the premier event for the aquaculture industry, taking place in Copenhagen from August 26-30.

This event will be a significant opportunity for us to introduce NOWA to the global aquaculture community, showcase our mission, and engage with industry leaders, experts, and professionals from around the world.

NOWA's international coverage is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Our founders and members hail from various countries across the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, bringing a wealth of perspectives and experiences.

This global approach ensures that our initiatives are relevant and impactful across different cultural and geographical contexts.
